Shalom Achshav (Peace Now), the largest grassroots movement in Israel's history, was founded in 1978 by 348 reserve officers of Israel Defense Forces. Experience had convinced them that while Israel must always be ready to defend itself, violence is not the answer to the conflict in the Middle East. In the years since its establishment Shalom Achshav has worked to achieve peace agreements between Israel, Egypt, Jordan, and the Palestinians. In the process, Shalom Achshav has become recognized at home and abroad as Israel’s premier peace movement. Beyond conducting mass demonstrations on behalf of peace, its activities include an array of people-to-people, education, and research projects.
Americans for Peace Now (APN) was founded in 1981 to help Shalom Achshav pursue a lasting and equitable peace in the Middle East and to build an informed and empowered pro-peace American public. APN’s agenda has expanded over the years to encompass a wide range of government relations and Jewish community activities. Today, Americans for Peace Now is the leading American Zionist organization working to help Israel achieve a secure peace with the Arab states and the Palestinian people.
