Anti-Defamation League’s Campus Leadership Study Mission to Israel: June 8-17, 2009
Purpose: ADL’s Campus Leadership Study Mission provides future leaders with a first hand perspective of Israel by meeting with the culturally diverse population, engaging with its vibrant society, learning about the strategic and social challenges facing Israel today, and touring the historically and geographically significant land.
Eligibility: Qualified applicants must be college freshmen, sophomores, or juniors who are leaders on their college/university campus through political involvement, student activism, and/or editors of the campus newspaper. Students must have an excellent academic record, an inquisitive mind and be interested in learning about Israel and the issues it faces in the Middle East. Students who have previously visited Israel are not eligible. Fifteen students from around the country will be selected to participate.
Requirements: A completed Application Form, accompanied by two letters of reference which can come from faculty, college administrators, professional journalists and/or other appropriate parties, your resume, and 500 word essay. A valid passport is required.
Interview: Final applicants will be interviewed by members of the Anti-Defamation League staff. Whenever possible, interviews will be conducted in person, either in a city close to your home or college/university. Arrangements for phone interviews will be made if necessary.
Cost: ADL has secured funding to support all expenses related to the Campus Leadership Mission to Israel. Therefore, there will be no cost for participants. This includes travel to and from New York and Israel, hotel for a pre-departure briefing on June 8-9th, accommodations and meals. Personal health insurance is not covered. Each participant must show proof of health coverage in order to participate in the trip.
Prior to the trip: Students will be given reading materials and participate in conference calls to discuss the history, current realities, the people of Israel and the issues facing this area of the global community. Students will be expected to read through these materials to ensure that they are fully prepared for the mission.
In Israel: Mission participants will meet with decision-makers, government and military officials, diplomats, journalists, students, and ordinary Israelis, Arab and Jewish, from diverse communities, cultures and backgrounds. Participants will visit key places of historical, religious and contemporary interest. The group will avoid any and all areas that we are advised may involve potential danger at that time. Travel will be on our own private bus. Participants will engage in a considerable amount of walking and some wilderness hiking that may be physically challenging.
In New York: Before heading to Israel, participants will have an orientation program in New York on June 8-9th where participants will meet with senior members of the ADL staff.
