At many universities, the current semester has been challenging for the pro-Israel campus community, as many students found themselves confronting protests of Israel’s actions during “Operation Cast Lead” in Gaza and anti-Israel sentiment during “Israel Apartheid Week.” April 20-24, another potential catalyst for campus anti-Israel activities will occur in Geneva: the Durban Review Conference.
Also known as “Durban II,” this UN-sponsored conference is a follow-up to the 2001 World Conference against Racism, Racial Discrimination, Xenophobia and Related Intolerance, which took place in Durban, South Africa. There is widespread concern that Durban II will be another opportunity for anti-Israel voices to virulently condemn Israel for alleged “human rights violations” – and that these voices may incite additional anti-Israel activities in communities and on campuses worldwide.
To provide important background information about the conference, and to prepare students and campus professionals for any challenges that may arise as a result of it, the Israel on Campus Coalition is pleased to present this compilation of resources from ICC member organizations. While we hope that the Durban Review Conference will not bring about a new round of anti-Israel campus activity, we also hope that this document will be an educational resource regarding Durban II.
